National Wrestling Coaches Association Teams up with IntelaMetrix
The NWCA has been monitoring some very promising research that has compared the IntelaMetrix BX-2000 ultrasound system to underwater weighing and skinfolds in 70 high-school aged wrestlers (age range 14-18). Intial results demonstrated that fat-free mass values measured by the ultrasound (IntelaMetrix BX-2000) system were not statistically different when compared to values obtained by underwater weighing in a heterogeneous high-school wrestling population during a hydrated state, and therefore should be considered as an alternative to skinfolds and bioelectrical impedance methods for determining the minimum weight for wrestlers.

Ultrasound has several advantages: it does not require a high degree of technician skill and therefore is easy to use, it is safe, results are instantaneous, and the device is portable. These advantages may make ultrasound attractive to educational institutions that may not have access to trained skinfold assessors, hydrostatic weighing, BOD POD, and to address concerns that have been expressed by coaches, officials, and athletic trainers who question the results of skinfold testing performed by someone who may not be completely objective or impartial.

The NWCA is optimistic that this research will successfully pass through  “peer review” and ultimately be published in a reputable Sports Medicine journal by Spring 2008.  In the interim, we encourage the sport science and wrestling  communities to familiarize yourself with this promising technology
